William Ray "Bill" Hurst

William (Bill) Ray Hurst, age 89, passed away peacefully, with his wife of 65 years by his side, on December 11, 2025, in Trenton, Georgia. He was born on September 28, 1936, in Salem, West Virginia, to Lewis Vincint Hurst and Alice Luberta Hurst (Swiger). Bill grew up on a farm, where yields were unpredictable, and weather was not always his friend. He lost his father at the age of twelve, which placed great responsibility on him at a very young age. This formative time set the tone for a life of hard work and a willingness to do whatever was necessary to provide for his family. Over the years, Bill developed the ability to build and fix almost anything with his hands. This included repairing cars, building additions to the family home, and converting a van into a camper to take extended family vacations throughout the United States. His work ethic was passed on to his son and daughter, who, through his example, were able to navigate life’s challenges and build very successful careers. Bill concluded his working career as the maintenance manager for McCallie School, a private all-boys school in Chattanooga, Tennessee. His dedication and reliability earned him the admiration and friendship of both his peers and senior managers. Bill married Linda Loy Hurst (Quick) on August 28, 1960. Linda was the love of Bill’s life, and together they shared 65 years of marriage. They were longtime members of the Magby Gap Church of Christ. He is survived by his wife, Linda Tingler Hurst; his son, Colonel (Ret) Douglas (Angela) Hurst; and his beloved grandchildren Alex Moon, Sara Moon (Dustin) Welden, Isabella Hurst, and Ana Sofia Hurst. And his Great-grandchildren McKenzie Welden and Carter Welden. He is also survived by his sister, Barbara McDaniel; his sister-in-law, Carol Gardner; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Teresa Moon; his brothers, Paul Hurst and Robert Hurst; and his sister, Anna Mary Nutter. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. Graveside services will be held on Thursday, January 29th at 2:00 p.m. at Hooker Cemetery with Minister Dick Hillis & Minister Noah Crider officiating.
